Room Temperature Super Conductors

Hi,

I was wondering if there was much in the way of theories regarding super conductors at room temperature because my Physics teacher has a theory which he formulated in uni. He, however actually succeeded in making a HTSC that worked at room temo but has not been able to make due to cost and equipment requirements.

Cheers,

James

Quantum Jack is very helpful to the community
i am not very knowledgable on the topic, although the concept has always intruiged me. are there any details that you have on how these may work, etc. im just a curious student, and this sounds fascinating.

First, your teacher needs to publish, and get in touch with people that already have the equipment. But your post is enigmatic. Did he or did he not make the HTSC at room temp? Or did he just make a theory about it? I frankly doubt it...

HTSC at room temp

Hi,

It is more than just a theory because he was able to make the superconductor. The problem was at the time he was unable to reproduce the results due to a chemical reacting with atmospheric constituents. He realised this was the case a fews years after and has not been able to find time to make another and conduct further tests. I would prefer not to print what chemicals make up the super conductor as we hope to find time to make another and patent etc.

My original post was really asking if people had heard anything about other people making any super conducters that work at any temp near room temp.

Cheers,

James

the highest known Tc is 138 (Cu-perovskite)

In fact, many perovskites exhibit high-Tc properties. His story sounds a bit convoluted to me but heck, anything I suppose is possible.

He's a High School teacher and how did he come across this amazing discovery as an undergrad again?

Close thread

Hi,

Thanks for your post and comments. They where very helpful. We plan to look at finding time to further research within the next few years!

Cheers,

James

This thread should now be closed in my opinion!

I see no reason to close it...

If he publishes something let us know.

Don't expect to see anything soon...

Hi,

Don't expect to see anything soon. I am in Y12 and he is teaching full time and it will be doubtful that we are able to find time to even make the superconductor.
I have been given the go ahead (he no longer has the time) to work on it when I go to university next year. If any fruit comes forth I will let you all know.

Cheers,

James

There are billions of dollars to be made here, but -
From the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_te...superconductor
Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductors, several materials have been claimed as being room-temperature superconductors. In every case, independent investigation has quickly proven these claims false. As a result, most condensed matter physicists now welcome with extreme skepticism any further claims of this nature.

As of 2006, the highest-temperature superconductor (at ambient pressure) is mercury thallium barium calcium copper oxide (Hg0.8Tl0.2Ba2Ca2Cu3O8.33), at 138 K, though there are claims that this can be raised to 164 K by applying high pressure to the superconductor.
This is about 133 degrees below room temp.

Actually its pretty simple to do. Simply lower the temperature of the room until the material goes superconducting.

He, he.... ;)

HTSC are promisising since keeping them cool with liquid nitrogen costs alot less than liquid helium
