Yes. Try removing the lens from the laser. What you can do, though I know it might be dreadfully time-consuming, is set up a system where any light that hits your diffraction grating is focused through a lens, like a magnifying glass. Then you could situate another mirror directly across from that. That would allow you to detect any photons that hit the diffraction grating.
