Have you noticed this same problem in your country aswell?
What do you think there is to do about it?

For the first time in years(!) there has been an increase of physics students at my university. I personally believe that the \"World Year of Physics 2005\" (http://www.physics2005.org/) is a terrific project to start with.

I really can\'t say. There are many people taking science classes on a similar level here, at least at the school I went to. Most of the kids very good in science all wanted to go to medical school, not get into research.

I have noticed a lack of interest in physics among students at my university, and from reading Physics World, this is a problem in the UK as well. A lecturer here said that there used to be lots of physics students, but as soon as the university started it\'s technology and engineering program, the vast majority of students who would have done physics did engineering. One problem (in my opinion) is that the tech and engineering degrees are marketed as \"do this degree and get a good well-paying job as soon as you graduate\". Most New Zealanders seem to have a \"work 9-5 (or some other shift) monday to friday, then get smashed on the weekend\" attitude, then back to work on monday, so I guess the career path suits their lifestyle.

On the other hand, it makes it good for the ones who are here now. Plenty of internships and grants.

Part of the problem, is too many choices. Many fine minds go into IT, engineering, chemistry.

If you go into those programs, you know what job you will have when you get out.

Can’t remember the last time I saw a job listing for physicist.

i\'m planing to take natural sciences when i go to university. most of the stuff you guys talk about hre i have to research for ages before replying. for my A-levels im going take physics and chemistry plus other subjects, i have noticed an increased in the popularity of science becuase at the moment im helping out with a science club at my school and there are about 70 children who go, it seems alot just for years 7,8 and 9.
