Could someone please tell me what fuzzy logic exactly is and what purpose it has in mathematics?

Fuzzy logic is basically the same as \"normal\" logic, except the operations and such have been generalized so that they can operate with any number on the interval [0,1]. I don\'t know what purpose is has in mathematics (besides the fact that it\'s a type of logic), but in every day use, the most famous application of fuzzy logic would have to be the fact that they use fuzzy logic in elevators.

Fuzzy logic is a kind of logic where rather than expressing all truth values as true (1) or false (0), you give them a real number somewhere in that range that corresponds to your degree of belief in the proposition. It\'s useful for AI type applications where you\'re often trying to make snap judgments without having complete information.
